The video game is often the image of friendship: some licenses accompany you with remarkable fidelity for several decades, so much so that we do not imagine aging without them, when others have moved away there So long ago that only an old photo found in a book will remind you with emotion of the good times spent together, a year ago, a century, an eternity ago. Without a doubt, the Ghosts’n Goblins series is unfortunately in the second category.
Anxious not to be stuck in the box of simple tributes to one of the most timeless classics of Capcom, Battle Princess Madelyn hopes to stand out by proposing a mode History at the antipodes of his elder, at least hopefully we.
This is the promise of the crowdfunding campaign : to transform a well-known genre by pushing the boundaries , as our Canadian friends might say.
After a number of cascading postponements that left the last moment glaring doubt about its effective exit to us, here comes the hour of truth for the other Madelyn.
She understood the ugly curly?
Sign of time passing and the end of some struggles for social emancipation, this tribute to the adventures of Arthur (and to a lesser extent Firebrand, which we miss at least as terribly), Battle Princess Madelynreverse codes, and offers as the name suggests the first role to the young Madelyn, who can not sleep, the fault, no doubt,
this damn tablet she does not want to let go. Fortunately, the grandfather arrives at the right moment, and hastens to tell him a sordid story in which an eponymous character sees his royal family decimated before his eyes.
Worse: his trusty dog who lets his protective instinct speak is also passing from life to death, and there is the drop of too much. Alongside the ghostly specter of fire-her dog, the princess will put on her armor to avenge by the sword the Machiavellian sponsors of this exaction.
In fact, the adventure takes on the air of action game in 2D leaving much to explore.
Without the traditional division into levels, it’s up to you to find your way, hidden somewhere within the myriad of tips gleaned along the way.
It’s because they have grievances, these native people! Without a quest journal or an adequate menu, you will have to be a certain mental rigor to remember who owns this jewel found in the mud, and too bad for efficiency. Ah, the same for the checks eh, it will do best, lack of tutorial. Anyway, you’re going to die, so let’s experiment, right?
Are you from the hanged family?
But no matter, the adventure is just waiting for you, and it is the rose with the sword that one launches into the assault of hordes interrupted by zombies, ghouls and other flying crap of all kinds. If the gameplay is damn effective despite its simplicity borrowed frankly Super Ghouls’n Ghostsit is difficult to sing the same praises at the level design.
Largely horizontal, however, he manages to quickly discourage the most seasoned adventurers, the fault of many inconsistencies, but also and especially a total absence of clairvoyance that would probably have led poor Arthur to eat his famous underpants. With a very limited start, most of the displayed platforms are unreachable, and when they are, they are often out of the field, giving rise to a very embarrassing schizophrenia.
Without a marker or any real indication of the direction to be followed, the player finds himself obliged to try, to jump improbable jumps hoping to land on a salvage platform that we could not guess. Sad.
It’s all the more unfortunate that the game is doing wonders on a graphical level, offering splendid, vast and brilliantly animated Mega Drive environments, but over which we will pass too quickly, all busy looking for this damn path that will lead to the next boss. Some levels become absolutely frustrating, like the swamp that will quickly force you to spin all possibilities before hoping to find the path that allows you to progress:
an absolute contradiction that can legitimately drive you crazy, as if Sonic the Hedgehogoffered only one valid path despite its many branches. Fortunately, the developers have shown a little leniency by offering a funny management of life, less punitive than usual: Madelyn can indeed reload a meter of respawn by killing a few mobs, what to avoid a game over too fast, provided you do not be afraid of going back and forth.
It is then death in the soul and jaw still tight that we will end up quickly draw a line on this mode History and its gallery of characters yet nicely drawn, to quickly fall back on this good old fashion Arcade, function of a stretch goal oh so salutary. And there, the miracle suddenly seems to happen:
Madelyn finds herself once again crying the death of her faithful canine companion, but sends waltz all the superfluity. Retogaming then regains its rights, cutting the action in good old stages of families, but tightening considerably its level design.
The result ? A much more punchy, effective, readable game,
which makes us realize that not all marriages are happiest. From the arcade, the Ghouls’n Ghosts formulais finally enough to itself, and therefore did not need to be passed to some roping. In any case not this one, it is a certainty.
Suddenly, we find ourselves faced with a two-headed game whose substantive marrow ultimately resides in its mode of play initially optional, but that saves the final punishment that is reserved for off-topic copies.
It is even more unfortunate that with such a dressing, the adventure never pushes us to hang on, because breaking zombie within these beautiful environments promises to be a journey of the most attractive. But in spite of its splendid visual and auditory homage, Battle Princess Madelyn will finally address only the addicts of the formula made famous by the developer of Osaka since 1985, eager to rub a new challenge less devious, but to the sensations intact .
