Ultimate, the last iteration of a series that has only grown since his first episode in 1999 on the Nintendo 64. In proportions so large that we do not wonder what character is missing the call of the fight way Nintendo, but if you do not have to invent new ones for the next Smash to get better.
Of course, there are still today players and gamers, video game enthusiasts, who will completely miss this hybrid game, between platforms, party game, fight where you have to raise percentages rather than doing lower a life bar. And what’s more normal when we do not necessarily want to see King Dadidou face Metal Gear’s Snake with too spicy curry shots, while an army of colorful Yoshi gets thawed by Cloud of Final Fantasyand a Wii Fit trainer who puts on yoga poses?
This description (yet terribly sellable) can indeed displease, cause misunderstanding, rejection, but that each and everyone is assured of one thing: this great bazaar is fashioned with the greatest seriousness, embodied by its historical producer Masahiro Sakurai, and this new episode on Switch that includes everything that made the success of the series, demonstrates it again brilliantly. And trio. Squared. Up to eight!
The Mario Kart of the fight
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate brings together all the characters that appeared in the series since the beginning, as well as all the battle arenas (DLC Wii U included) for a total once unlocked, by adding new and Echo characters (example: Ken from Street Fighter , variant of Ryu faster but similar in its grip) of seventy-four playable characters and one hundred and three arenas where to compete. In all conditions, from the most austere to the craziest with pistols, bombs, boomerangs and pokeballs galore and available.
In fact, the meeting of all that has made Smash up to today can give Ultimate the false air of improved compilation of the latest game, like a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe , ultimate version but similar in the bottom to its Wii U version. It is not so: if Super Smash Bros. Ultimate does not seem to mark a milestone like Brawl compared to Melee (eight years separate these two games against four for Smash 3DS / Wii U and Ultimate), it is nonetheless a real new game. We rediscover the characters their mimicry and unprecedented attacks, always amazed by the constant attention to detail.
Which of course is one of the charms of the series in general and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in particular, and raises it above its video game status to make it a love encyclopedia of the Japanese video game, its mascots, its genres, its music (hundreds, in their original or reorchestrées versions, remixed, and to listen everywhere, Switch obliges) but also of his more anecdotic characters or his more discrete series.
The main novelty of this Smash Switch is precisely the importance it offers to secondary characters, through the appearance of spirits, which for some are also trophies and appear in combat. Now, all creatures, villains, heroines, who have not won a place in the final roster still demonstrate their value through an artwork decked with a bar of defense, attack, a type (which meets the rules of stone-leaf-scissors at Fire Emblem) and that we associate with a playable character to make it beefier but also to start it with a benefit, an object or even landing to an inconvenience, for example the fog or fire that covers an arena. These Spirits are drawn from all the series from which the playable characters are derived and beyond: Mach Rider? Glory of Heracles? Does that remind you of something ? Well, it’s present!
With more than six hundred spirits to collect, their hunt is similar to the pleasures of completion of a Panini album, but is also indicative of the only flaws that can be attributed to this Smash. First, the amiibo have definitely replaced the 3D models Trophies that could be seen in the previous episodes, but most importantly, the main mode to get these Spirits, the adventure The Glow of the world is quite disappointing on a good point precise: the absence of scenario.
Indeed, if the previous scripted mode that proposed Smash Bros., that of the Wii version, did not offer a story that we still remember, the latter had the merit of giving body, through beautiful cutscenes, the adventures of Ness, Fox, Captain Falcon and the whole gang. It was also playable to two, which is not the case here.
Whereas during Nintendo Direct dedicated, the introduction of new fighters was often done through a cinematic, it is a shame to have only the introduction with all the protagonists at the edge of the cliff, erased by the light of Kilaire, the big bad guy, before going on a hunt for the spirits on a world map which, certainly,
has fun to group like zones of an amusement park the different universes of the very numerous characters of the game. The interactions on victories in combat to progress on this world map (a portal that opens, a bridge that builds …) become more painful, especially when at the same time, the Table of Spiritsmodeallows you to get them with more simplicity, without this action game reaction card, RPG style way.
But it is precisely this choice granted and always multiple in all modes of the game, which makes that we pass on this aspect that we would have liked more … epic?

Because if there is a slice of gherkin (and there are some who do not like) in this giant sandwich, for the rest, ie all the content that overflows, there is enough to be satiated during month. Between the collection of the spirits of course, within the adventure or not, but also the Classic mode playable with many, with this good idea to propose opponents and a final boss in adequacy with the story that could be done around the chosen character, the training mode, 1 against 100, the Smash mode and all its variants where all the parameters are customizable, the fight in teams, survival or tournament, the jukebox, the anecdotes in disorder at the bend of a screen of loading and of course, the multi that offers endless possibilities, the game is always more generous.
Unfortunately, the online features will not be tested at the time of writing this review, simply unavailable for the exercise of the latter. Finally, a word about the sensations of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate:
